My Favorite Fall Color

Fall is my favorite season of the year. I love it for many reasons: the cooler weather, my wedding anniversary, and my most favorite color palette. The brilliant golds, burnt oranges, and deep reds are beautiful and a great way to incorporate the seasonal elements into your clothing. Of these colors, the deep red shades have to be my favorite. You could say that I'm berry excited for fall.

Throughout history, the color red has been associated with sacrifice, danger and courage. Currently many people associate red with heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love and joy. It is the color of symbolizing happiness and good fortune in many Asian cultures. A hue that evokes such strong emotion can be a little intimidating to wear. One doesn't have to go bold in an all deep red colored outfit. Below I've put together several of my favorite berry hued things, starting at lipstick and ending at dresses.

Summer Beauty Essentials for the Busy Mom

This post contains affiliate links. Please visit my disclosure page for more information.

Summer is here! Despite owning a lot of makeup, I find myself reaching for the same handful of items each time I put on makeup. The beauty of these products is that they work great by themselves or together, depending on how much time you have to spend on yourself. No judgement from me if you decide to sleep in and swipe on some lip gloss.

Summer Beauty Essentials
  • Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation: this is a very recent find that I've only worn a few times, but I am impressed. Great coverage without causing clogged pores (a huge problem for me), and an astounding number of shades to choose from. I lucked out with my selection on the first try, something that doesn't normally happen for me!

  • Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream: for days I don't want the full coverage of a foundation, but I want some coverage. I had a harder time picking a color with this. Tan is too light and deep is too dark. Luckily it has a great price point (under $10 a tube), so I bought one of each and mix them together. This customization is helpful as I get more tan over the summer.

  • Stila All Over Shimmer liquid luminizer: I love this stuff. Add a drop to your moisturizer, BB/CC cream, or foundation for a dewy look. I prefer to use it to target my cheek bones, my orbital bone, and above my eyebrows. The color is a gorgeous rose gold, which seems to compliment nearly every skin tone.

  • Urban Decay All Nighter makeup setting spray: This stuff is incredible. My makeup does. not. budge after putting it on, even if I'm sitting outside in 100 degree heat. It has been worth every penny.

  • Nyx Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream: My personal favorite matte lip cream, it doesn't get too dry and the color payoff is amazing. I love the colors Stockholm (nude pink) and Antwerp (coral pink) so much that I keep one tube in my purse and another in my bathroom. It's my go-to lip color and incredibly budget friendly.

  • NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl: this was a birthday splurge, but it has reignited my love of red lips. It seems to be a universal red because Taylor Swift wears it a lot, and she and I look nothing alike.

  • Supergoop! Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40: I turned 35 a few weeks ago and am starting to see the effects of not taking care of my skin as a teen and in my 20s. Well, there's no time like the present to start, right? I upgraded my sunscreen this year and have been really happy with this. It absorbs really quicks, doesn't leave me with white streaks on my face, and has not caused a breakout or clogged pore yet!

  • Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 in Black Tea & Blackberry: I developed chapped lips earlier in the summer that would not go away for weeks. It was nearly a month of peeling and achy lips. I decided to see a dermatologist because I googled my symptoms. After reassuring me that it wasn't cancer, she suggested that I purchase a separate lip balm with SPF in it. I read great reviews for this. Since it's developed for men, the scents were more appealing to me. The Black Tea & Blackberry scent smells really good; sweet, but not yummy. I don't want to lick my lips constantly. On a side note: don't ever google your symptoms. I should know better.

Things I Bought & Liked 2015 edition

This post contains affiliate links. Please visit my disclosure page for more information.

For the past few years, I've been writing a year end list of my favorite purchases of the year. This year's list is a little different. This year I feel like I really came into my own with style. Whether it was breastfeeding friendly or something for a night out, I seem to have found an aesthetic I really like. You can see past years here: 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011. You can find shoppable links and a few honorable mentions at the end of this post.

Things I Bought & Liked 2015 edition

Faux leather leggings By far my favorite purchase of fall and winter. They're a great way to dress up while still being comfortable - I swap out plain black leggings with their rock and roll sister. I'm getting so much use out of them that I wish I had bought more than one pair!

NARS Audacious Lipstick in "Grace" The most perfect pinky coral for my complexion! It really opened the door to me wearing more bright colored lipsticks and trying shades I would normally pass on.

Leopard print mirrored sunglasses I got so many compliments on these on social media and in person. The retro shape of the frame is made modern with the mirrored lens.

Faux leather slip ons My blog's name may be the Lactivist in Louboutins, but slip ons make every day life so much easier. These neutral shoes work with anything from jeans and a t-shirt to giving a sporty edge to a feminine skirt.

You Lingerie nursing bra and panty in "Chloe" Who would've thought the sexiest piece of lingerie I own would be one I could breastfeed in? The cage bra gives an edge to the otherwise feminine and lacy bra. The panties are just as gorgeous and comfortable. Oh and did I mention I can breastfeed or pump while wearing it? Amazing. You can buy the nursing bra here and buy the matching panties here. In fact, their entire Very Sexy You collection is beautiful, comfortable, and functional.

Sam & Libby "Eliza" booties My sister teased me that these flat boots are very Austin Powers. While she may think they're shagadelic (baby, yeah!), they're statement booties without a teetering heel or over the knee length. They're versatile enough for day under bootcut jeans or showcased with faux leather leggings at night.

OPI "First Class Desires" nail polish I've gotten in the habit of giving myself a manicure once a week as a way to take care of myself. I typically do it while studying - paint a coat, let it dry while doing any assignment, and then finish up. This color isn't black, it's actually a dark purple with gold and bronze flecks in it. Dark enough for winter, but a nice alternative to my standard black polish. Two coats was all I needed and it went on so easily.

BaubleBar leather tassel earrings I wore this pair on Thanksgiving and then for the rest of the weekend. And the following weekend. The earrings are so light in my ears and come in a variety of colors. Plus, they're a great way to distract from hair that hasn't been washed or done in... well, lets just say in a while.

Honorable mentions: my coral maxi skirt, Urban Decay's Smokey eyeshadow palette, and lace up pointy toed flats. Shoppable links are below.

So Fancy - New Year's Eve

This post contains affiliate links. Please visit my disclosure page for more information.

Christmas is only 2 weeks away, which means New Years Eve is just under 3 weeks away. Most NYE have been spent at home watching the ball drop in Times Square while in pajamas or other comfy clothes. If you have plans, let me live vicariously through you! If your plans happen to include a nursing baby, here's some help with what to wear.

Five Minutes of Self Care

A year ago I was starting down the path of healing from postpartum depression and anxiety. I had started seeing an amazing therapist and with her encouragement, had begun to take little steps towards feeling like myself. She really recommended self care, but specified that it didn't have to be monumental, it could be incremental. The first and easiest step for me was taking care of my outside when I felt up to it.

IMG_0215.PNG

What started a year ago is still very much alive and well most days of the week. It is 3 extra minutes after a shower while the baby is still asleep so I can put on a swipe of mascara and eyeliner. Some days I get lucky and have enough time to put thought into what I will wear that isn't a pair of yoga pants. It's spending a few extra minutes on myself before I spend the rest of the day caring for everyone else.

It can seem like such a trivial thing and may make me seem superficial to those that don't know what I've been dealing with. This is why I wear makeup. This is why I purposefully pick out my clothes. Because if I am wearing bright pink lipstick, then I'll feel bright and happy. Because for a few minutes a day, I can feel like my normal self and not the angry shell of the person I used to be. This is not to make a statement, or make myself seem like some kind of mom who has it all (HA!). This is to simply feel like me. This is my instant pick-me-up. This is worth it. I am worth it.

My Mom Uniform: Mix It Up

This week's #bfingstyle post mixes stripes and leopard print. An Undercover Mama nursing shirt makes the outfit breastfeeding friendly. The vest is on my fall lust list and layers very well with the other understated pieces.

My Summer Beauty Must Haves

Summer Beauty List

The warmer weather is a great time to try new trends. I'm a fan of bright colors and a dewy glow.

Skin:

Since my skin tone isn't very even (I have red areas and dark spots), I use a bit of BB cream to correct it. Of the three items listed, I prefer the Maybelline BB cream. It provides light coverage and does not feel heavy on my face. The Smashbox cream provides medium coverage, while Jane Iredale is full coverage.

Lips and Eyeliner:

A quick swipe of bright lipstick is my go-to, but I'll swap it out for pigmented eyeliner if I have a few extra minutes. The first lipstick shown (Nars Audacious in Grace) is the perfect coral pink on my medium tan complexion. The first eyeliner shown (Nyx Cosmetics Retractable Eyeliner in Aqua Green) is more sheer, so I put on a few layers to make my brown eyes pop.

Glow:

Using an illuminator is a great way to work a summer glow at night. While the products shown may be too dark for some complexions, each brand makes lighter and cooler shades. I like to mix it in with my face lotion for a subtle all over glow. Alternately, you can use your fingers to highlight brow bones, cheekbones, and your collar bone.

Nails:

Since I wash my hands about 17,000 times a day, I've stopped getting manicures at the nail salon. The colors chip quickly. Instead, I've started doing my own nails at home. It's a great form of self care and saves money, too. The first polish shown (Essie's "Sunset Sneaks") is one I've been wearing over and over again. It's supposed to be a bright crimson, but appears bright coral on my complexion

My Mom Uniform: Ladies That Brunch

For me, warmer weather means more socializing. My DFW friends would get together in the evenings for margaritas, but my Austin friends enjoy getting together for brunch. I like being able to see my friends earlier in the day and then spending the rest of my time with my family. A little time with friends recharges my batteries, which makes me a better mama and wife.

Whether you're meeting your mama tribe or heading out with the whole family, the style options below have you covered - both are breastfeeding friendly. Click the links below the image to shop. Pass the mimosa, please!

Mother's Day Guide: Pamper the Mama

Want to make the mom in your life feel really special? Looking for some suggestions to #treatyoself? Check out my picks below!

Spoil Your Mama

Tiffany Notes Alphabet pendant I received the letter E for my first Mother's Day and the letter R last year after Rohan's birth. Not only are they simple and classic, but they come in that beautiful blue box.

Lush Secret Garden Bath Bomb A bath is a luxury for me these days. Why not enjoy an inexpensive way to make it feel more luxurious? Available in a variety of scents and under $10, so you can build a variety pack.

Godiva chocolates I don't think I need to provide reasons for this one.

Raspberry Maternity Nursing Chemise At the end of a long day of diapers, nursing, and food making, it's wonderful to slip into this chemise instead of pajama pants. I felt beautiful, feminine, and sexy. This chemise and all other lingerie is now 30% off until 5/4/15 - use code MOMLOVE at checkout.

"Tiny Humans" coffee mug A must have for every mama, because raising tiny humans IS exhausting. Substitute a nice cuppa if that's your hot beverage preference.

ipsy Monthly Subscription Service Each month, subscribers receive a Glam Bag filled with 5 products or tools. Many of the products are deluxe sized and there's at least one full sized product in each bag. I've found many new favorites using this $10 a month service [link is my referral].

"Caroline" Diaper Bag in Brandy If you're going to tote around diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, snacks, and toys, you might as well use a bag you're going to love. It can also be used as a tote after your diaper bag days are over. I may have found my perfect non diaper bag diaper bag, but this one will always be on my lust list.

Things I Like - 2014 Edition

For the past few years, I've been writing a year end list of my favorite purchases of the year. This year's list is a little different. While I didn't do as much shopping (thanks to bed rest and a new baby), I did buy a few baby-related items I had to share. I thought that there would have been more breastfeeding things on here, but other than the items below (and a few other items to replace worn out staples), I didn't purchase many breastfeeding items. You can see past years here: 2013, 2012, 2011.

Things I Bought & Liked in 2014

Double Pearl Earrings. I was obsessed with these earlier this year. In addition to being on trend, the lack of dangly shiny things make them baby friendly. I love wearing them to dress up my mom uniform of jeans and a t-shirt.

Boba Wrap in Starburst. I've worn this baby more than his older brother and I'm especially thankful for this stretchy wrap. Between seemingly non-stop growth spurts and wonder weeks, it made the first several weeks of life more bearable. You can read more about it here.

Tarte "Lights, Camera, Splashes!" mascara. I typically use a fantastic drugstore waterproof mascara, but gave this a try after a friend raved about it. Not only is it easier to take off at the end of the day, it's got a fantastic formula which makes multiple layers a breeze, without the clumping my drugstore brand would bring about. Luckily Tarte had a great Black Friday sale, and I was able to snag a two tubes for the price of what one normally costs!

Motherlove Nipple Cream and Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter. Again, both of these items were lifesavers during the first several weeks of life. Rohan was born with a class 3 lip tie and a severe tongue tie as well. I would coat my nipples with one of these after every feed and it made a world of difference until we were able to get his ties revised. Why did I buy two different brands? I kept one near the place we frequently nursed (our living room couch) and the other in my bathroom. Sometimes one would go into a diaper bag if we were heading out. You can read more about my breastfeeding experience the second time around here.

Leopard slip ons. There have been several versions of these leopard slip ons available, in a wide variety of price ranges. I love these because they're sporty, comfortable, and great to chase around. They've quickly become my go to shoes for everything: a run to the grocery store, a few hours at the park, even kids birthday parties. They look great with skinny jeans and a t-shirt, and are neutral enough to pair with a plaid shirt or scarf for the fall and winter.

Boyfriend jeans. My new favorite cut of jean! I'm probably a little late to this trend, but better late than never! More forgiving than skinny jeans, they're available in a wide variety of colors and washes. My most beloved pair are a distressed wash from Old Navy. They're cut a little higher, which is great for masking my postpartum belly. I usually pair mine with the leopard slip ons above.

Those are my favorite purchases of 2014. What did you buy that you absolutely loved?

Things I Like - 2013 Edition

This is my third year doing this list (check out 2011's list or 2012's list) and it's really a few of my favorite purchases from this year. This year's list doesn't have any breastfeeding items on it, but next year's list will!

Things I Bought & Liked in 2013

    Things I Bought & Liked in 2013
  1. Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer My previous concealer was very drying and would feather by 10am. This concealer is exactly what I need for my heavy dark circles: it's full coverage and very moisturizing. A little dot goes a long way when used with a foundation brush. Cost of concealer: $24. The cost of looking awake every day when I am exhausted: priceless.
  2. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner My sister introduced me to this product when she accidentally left hers at my house after a visit. Her loss was definitely my gain. I am afraid of liquid eyeliner that involves a very thin brush and a pot of makeup, but this is practically idiot proof. This liquid eyeliner is in a very thin pen making it a lot more user friendly for those of us who aren't adept with thin brushes. It's available in a wide variety of colors. I picked up black for everyday wear and one in Cobalt (a bright electric blue) for when I wanted to change it up a little. NYX Cosmetics makes a similar product, but it is not water or sweat proof like Stila's product is.
  3. Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream I love it because it evens my skin tone and helps hide marks. It costs less than $10 and is available just about everywhere. I put it on as a base (no moisturizer) and then use concealer on top for my dark circles and/or dark spots. It lasts all day, but does rub off if I wipe my mouth or blow my nose.
  4. Rose Gold Name Plate Necklace I channeled my inner Carrie Bradshaw when I asked for and received a nameplate necklace for my birthday. I asked for it in a rose gold finish since I'm still obsessing about that finish. The website it was purchased from is ridiculously overpriced, but I found a group discount deal online that lowered the price significantly.

Those are my 5 favorite things I bought. What'd you buy this year that you absolutely love?
