I had been out of the house all day (12+ hours) and my nursling was asleep by the time I got back. Crap. I really needed him to nurse! I pulled out my breast pump, scavenged around the house for all the parts, and pumped.
Hello old friends
I wasn't too sure of what to expect. By the way my breasts felt, I thought I was going to fill most of a bottle! Now I know that breast pumps are not an accurate measure of milk supply, but I was still curious of how much I'd pump.
Since E typically nurses on the left side (apparently my right side produces something disgusting), I felt a lot fuller on Lefty. Not unusual since it has always been my primary producer. Shrimpy (yes, I have names for them) would be good for an ounce to an ounce and a half, but never more than that.
So I pumped. I had to go through the let down phase twice before actually experiencing MER. It really hurt to pump Shrimpy so I unhooked the hose and put in the plunger while pumping Lefty. Then I talked to my friend for about 15 minutes. I wasn't paying much attention to what I was producing, but was compressing to make sure I emptied as much as possible.
One stinking ounce!!!!
One ounce of milk is all I got! I don't feel empty, just less full. I'm hoping E wakes up soon and I can nurse him since nurslings do a better job of emptying a breast than a pump. I know we only nurse a few times a day, but I really thought I'd get more than an ounce. I know there's more in there, but I guess he's the only one who can get it out!
Have you gone back to pumping after an extended break? How did it feel?
